Google puts its own application to find mobile devices in the Play Store

After a long wait, Google has released the Android equivalent of Apple's 'Find my iPhone' application.

The application, which is now available for free download on the Google Play Store, is based on the Android Device Manager location service that was launched for the first time in August, but was only available through a browser.

The app provides essentially the same functionality as the website, allowing users to locate a lost or misplaced device on Google Maps and play it at full volume for five minutes, even if it was in silent mode before losing it.

The app also allows Android device owners to remotely add a screen lock to their device (if it lacked one) to prevent someone else from using it before finding it, and allows remote data wiping.

While it does the same as the web version, as Google points out in its ad, the idea is to make it easier for people to use the service if they are away and do not have access to a computer.
The application (at least on a Nexus 7 2013 edition) also seems to respond better than the web interface displayed on the tablet, which makes it easier to locate an Android phone from the tablet or vice versa.

Taking into account that according to the forecasts of Canalys analysts, in 2014 185 million tablets will be sold with the Android OS, that is, 65% of the total sales of PC computers, the presentation by Google of its own Remote data location and wipe app seems very timely. It will have to compete with the dozens of third-party Android security apps already on the market that offer similar features to Android Device Manager.
